The "Strength" of Valencia's Higher Learning  

Before visiting Spain, make sure to include Valencia in your itinerary. This city is the third largest city in the nation, and the capital of the Valencian Community. Valentia's name originates from a Latin word meaning "valor" and "strength," which itself is based on the Roman Empire's practice of awarding war veterans who had fought valiantly. Today, visitors to Valencia can enjoy a wide variety of scenic spots. That includes the Late Gothic Silk Exchange, the Central Market, the primary railway station, and an array of noteworthy architectural structures. In addition, Valencia contains several schools of higher learning that are worth including if you visit Spain.

One of Valencia's most famous schools of higher learning is the University of Valencia. In fact, it is also the oldest and largest university throughout Spain! Currently, the school has roughly 55,000 students. King Jaume I created the school in 1245, with the goal of governing the city of Valencia. However, it did not become a specialized school of higher learning until 1498. Soon after the "constitutions" of the university were created. The school became an official university when it opened in October of 1502.

Throughout its history, Valencia has undergone major changes. "In the early 1800s it underwent significant reconstruction following a bombing by Napoleon's army. Also, various buildings were refurbished or reconstructed throughout the history of the university. One example is a chapel that was completely rebuilt in 1736, in a Baroque style. Today, a mural painting in the chapel remains in it. Since then, various smaller paintings have been added to the mural painting. Various major events have taken place at the chapel, including recitals and concerts. Then in 1999, the structure's refurbishment was finished.  

Today, one of the goals of the university is to create and maintain affiliations with other international universities. This happens by participating in international networks and programs, or via bilateral agreements. It also maintains an international exchange program, allowing foreign students to work and live at the university. 

There's also the Polytechnic University of Valencia. The school was originally founded in 1968, and then officially became a university in the year 1971. However, some of the Valencia universities are over a century old! The university system includes a total of four campuses, as well as 15 schools and faculties. As its name suggests, the university's focus is on technology and science. Currently, the school has nearly 35,000 students, and its faculty includes over 2,600 members.
